I'M BATMAN!

I'M BATMAN!

After a brief artistic hiatus... I decided to pick up a pencil and tackle some art.  I've always liked the Batman.  And since I'll never be as wealthy or as fit as Batman, this is probably the closest I'll ever come to being the Dark Knight.  Short of trying on a Halloween costume (but again, would want to get more fit).

Anywho, I drew this up in 2 hours, cuz I wanted something new and different for my Facebook profile picture.  And I thought it be a quick and fun drawing exercise to ease myself into the groove of drawing after a month long absence from drawing anything beyond random work doodling.  Turned out to get a bit more involved... but I like the end result.

Coincidentally enough, I drew this up on the same day that Adam West (1960's TV Batman) got his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame!

Valentine's Commission: Colonial Cassie

Hey all, this blog needed an update... so here's a new piece.  One of my co-workers saw the pirate piece I did for another co-worker.  And commissioned me to do something similar.  The above art is what came of it.  Her and her man are into the simpler life of colonial times, it's their thing, so she wanted me to draw them in that era.  It was for Valentine's Day, for her man.

This was a bit of a challenge, as I tend to lean more towards a comic-book/sci-fi/fantasy/cartoony kinda vibe, and i was like "Colonial times?  What?"  But I think it worked out.  And it was good to draw something besides spandex-clad, superheroes.  But I like the end result.

Birthday Portrait Aarrrrrr-t

Holy crap, I haven't posted here in over a month!  Which is odd, cuz I have been drawing in the past month.  I need to post more here.

Anywho, the above is a portrait I did for a co-worker for her birthday (which is today... Everybody sing!  Happy Birthady to yo.... no?  Nobody wants to sing?  Fine!).  She's really into pirates, so I drew her as a pirate.  Which is very odd, cuz I'm not a fan of doing portrait work.  I hate drawing portraits actually.  I really do.  But I did it, here it is.  She liked it.  So yay!

It was kinda helpful that she has dark hair, I would of hated drawing all that hair had she been a blonde... cuz it was a dark I could hide a lot with the blacks, which was immensely helpful.

I'll be your Superman...

Alright, it's been 4 days since the last post, but that's cuz I was trying to get this one perfect...  For those who don't know, this would be me... as Superman, and the love of my life, as Lois Lane.  Though she hates Lois Lane, so I guess it's Supes and a innocent bystander in love.

Portrait skills are hard for me, they are not easy, so this one took a while to get to work.  It was especially difficult, because the girl and I had the weekend off, so I had to work on it without her seeing it.  But mission accomplished, I believe.  Happy Valentine's sweetheart, I love you!!!

You've got red on you...

A quick little sketch today of one of my favorite films of all time... Shaun of the Dead.

I had this itch to take a stab at drawing Shaun for the past couple weeks, so today I fed that itch.  Portraiture is one of my weaker points as an artist, I can do it, but it's difficult, and usually time consuming.  While not a perfect match to Mr. Pegg, I think the above drawing came across well, you know it's Shaun, you know he's about to bash some zombie skull in.  To capture Shaun, you really just have to get that slightly balding hair right, and you have it.  One thing my college art teachers always tried to get across is you're not trying to draw (or paint) that person, just enough that you know who it is without having to be told.  There are small visual things about a person that make it that person (i.e., Leno and has monstrous chin, etc.), and those are things you most want to capture.

And if you haven't seen the masterpiece, "Shaun of the Dead".  Then stop reading my blog and go watch it.  NOW!
